Eric Liddell’s Centenarian Legacy of Inspiration
at The Eric Liddell Community
One man, one hundred years, and Eric Liddell’s legend lives on at The Eric Liddell Community in Edinburgh, Scotland with a positive impact on the lives of all people with various nationalities, ethnicities, and backgrounds.
Liddell is most famous and well-known for his win at the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris, France.
The Eric Liddell 100 program led by The Eric Liddell Community celebrates this as his legacy of a hundred years.
Established in 1980, the Eric Liddell Community is a charity that honors Liddell’s lifetime values of Olympic Games excellence, education, and humanitarianism.
They run crucial services including an adult day care, carer respite, and a cafe to enhance community health and well-being. This supports all people including people with dementia and carers with grace, compassion, and integrity.
As one of Scotland’s finest athletes and sporting heroes, Liddell’s exceptional journey to the Olympic Games is an inspiration for the Scots from current to future generations.
Born in Tianjin, China, to Scottish Christian missionary parents, Liddell's upbringing shaped his faith and perspective of community, society, and the world.
In 1925, he followed his parents’ footsteps by returning to China as a devoted Christian and missionary teacher.
His support for the Chinese people during World War II with China’s Japanese occupation in the Weihsien Internment Camp was recently commemorated at the St. Giles’ Cathedral with the presence of the Chinese Embassy.
A volunteer at The Eric Liddell Community shared that Liddell “felt called by God to stay and help the Chinese at the camp because they needed him.”
His sacrifice for the Chinese people and China is part of his historical legacy.
He saw the humanity and life in all people, whether Scots or Chinese.
The Eric Liddell Community is housed in a church located at Edinburgh’s Holy Corner, which has been renovated to better serve the community's needs. While the charity upholds Christian values, they are inclusive of people from all religions and beliefs.
This embodies Liddell’s mission to assist people in overcoming challenges and realizing their full potential. He was a humanitarian at heart and this is his legacy for Edinburgh and the world.
